Abandoned Cars Block Peak District Pass: Road Closure and Snow Conditions (2026)

Imagine a picturesque mountain pass, its beauty marred by a bizarre sight: abandoned cars strewn across the road, victims of a winter storm's wrath. This is the reality at Winnats Pass in the Peak District, near Castleton, where a snowy ordeal has left the road blocked and travelers stranded. But here's where it gets even more frustrating: despite efforts to clear the route, the very vehicles meant to be rescued are now the obstacles preventing their own salvation.

As Storm Goretti loomed on Thursday night, Derbyshire authorities proactively closed several high-altitude roads, yet Winnats Pass remained accessible—a decision that would soon prove problematic. The gorge's treacherous conditions quickly overwhelmed motorists, forcing many to abandon their vehicles mid-journey. While most roads have since reopened, Winnats Pass remains inaccessible, its clearance complicated by the very cars meant to traverse it.

And this is the part most people miss: even heavy-duty equipment couldn't break through. Mark Cooper, owner of Waterside Farm in Edale, arrived Friday morning with a tractor equipped for plowing and gritting, only to find his path blocked by the abandoned cars. Similarly, a county council gritting team had to retreat, unable to navigate the obstruction. Cooper noted, "The road was nearly clear, but the top section, where conditions were worst last night, remains impassable due to the stranded vehicles."

Among the initially closed roads, the A6024 Holme Moss and A57 Snake Pass have reopened, though the latter requires cautious navigation, according to a council spokesperson. The gritting teams, working tirelessly through the night and into the morning, have focused on primary routes, but the battle isn't over. With wet roads and freezing temperatures forecast, the spokesperson warns, "Please take extra care if you must travel."

Here’s a thought-provoking question: Should drivers who abandon their vehicles in such conditions be held accountable for hindering rescue and clearance efforts? While the council commends the gritting teams and farmer contractors for their dedication, the incident raises broader questions about responsibility during extreme weather events. What do you think?
