Plus, the American Film Institute recognized it as one of the Top 10 movies of the year. So, when the Oscar nominations were announced, the complete absence of any recognition for 'Jay Kelly' left many scratching their heads.
But here's where it gets interesting: Adam Sandler, a performer whose extensive and often overlooked filmography includes gems like 'Punch Drunk Love' and 'Uncut Gems,' revealed a surprisingly zen attitude towards this latest Oscar omission. Speaking at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival, Sandler, who is 59 years old, shared his reaction to not receiving a nomination.
"I woke up that morning and heard I didn't get it, and said, 'Oh, that's fine,'" Sandler recounted to film historian Leonard Maltin. He elaborated that his peace with the situation was further solidified when he saw the caliber of actors who did receive nominations for Best Supporting Actor. "I was like, 'Whoa!' so it made sense," he admitted humbly, acknowledging the strong competition.
Sandler expressed immense pride for his role as Ron, the overlooked manager in 'Jay Kelly,' particularly for a pivotal, emotionally charged scene he shared with George Clooney, who played the self-absorbed actor at the heart of the drama. "Watching that scene kind of broke my heart, because I remember how hard we worked, and how much that scene meant on paper," Sandler reflected. "And you want to make sure you crushed it when you're shooting it."
He also fondly recalled the filming experience in Italy, a place intimately familiar to Clooney. Sandler praised his co-star's knack for discovering authentic, off-the-beaten-path dining spots. "Clooney knows everything about Italy," Sandler enthused. "I remember for two nights in a row we ate at this place before we shot that Clooney recommended. And it was just like, 'Show me more, Clooney!'"
And this is the part most people miss: Sandler didn't just accept the snub quietly; he turned it into a comedic masterclass during his acceptance speech for the Maltin Modern Master Award. With a golden trophy in hand, he playfully quipped, "Thank you for my fortune teller who told me in 1982 I would win an Oscar for a movie called 'Jay Kelly.'" He then humorously questioned if the prediction might have been for 'Jay Kelly 2,' drawing roars of laughter from the audience.
He continued his good-natured ribbing by congratulating all the actual nominees, stating, "Congrats, you earned it. I truly believe you are better at acting than me." But he couldn't resist a final jab: "I also truly believe you are better at ass-kissing the academy than me."
Known affectionately as The Sandman, Sandler concluded his speech with a mic-drop moment, promising his fellow actors, "I think next year I'm gonna whup your ass. I'll show the world the deep, darkest Sandman you have seen yet...in 'Grown Ups 3'!"
