Big news for iPhone users and Android buddies: Your texts might soon get a whole lot more secure! Apple is on the verge of rolling out end-to-end encryption (E2EE) for RCS messaging, meaning your chats with Android users could soon be as private as your iMessage conversations.
According to reports from 9to5Mac, eagle-eyed tech enthusiast TiinoX83 discovered a hidden setting in the iOS 26.3 beta 2. This setting, spotted in the code, hints at the ability for carriers to enable encryption for RCS messages. This is a significant step forward for privacy.
Now, you might be wondering, what exactly is RCS? Rich Communication Services (RCS) is essentially the upgraded version of SMS, bringing features like read receipts and typing indicators to your cross-platform chats. Apple introduced RCS support with iOS 18 back in 2024, which is why you might have noticed these features when texting Android users.
But here's where it gets controversial... Currently, RCS messages between iPhones and Android phones are only encrypted during transit. This means that while your messages are protected while traveling between devices, they could potentially be intercepted. With E2EE, however, your messages become completely unreadable to anyone but you and the recipient – not even Apple can peek at your conversations!
This is a big deal because it significantly enhances the privacy of your communications.
But this is the part most people miss... Once Apple releases this feature, it's up to carriers worldwide to enable it. Currently, only four carriers have the feature set up, and they're all based in France: Bouygues, Free, Orange, and SFR. This suggests that Apple might be using France as a testing ground before a wider rollout.
To make this happen, Apple will be using the RCS Universal Profile 3.0, which was first unveiled in March 2025. Apple promised to support these features across all its operating systems, including iOS, iPadOS, macOS, and watchOS, through future software updates.
Apple is expected to launch iOS 26.3 later this month, possibly around January 26. We'll have to wait and see if E2EE RCS makes its debut, or if Apple will hold off until iOS 27 later this year.
