The League One Striker Who Left a Legendary Midfielder Speechless!
Former Arsenal and England star Jack Wilshere, now managing Luton Town, was left in awe of Plymouth Argyle's Lorent Tolaj, showering the striker with praise after his team's narrow 1-0 defeat at Home Park on January 25, 2026. Wilshere declared Tolaj the best striker he's witnessed in League One this season, a truly remarkable endorsement from a player of his caliber.
While Tolaj didn't find the back of the net himself, it was Brendan Galloway who secured the crucial victory for Plymouth, netting from close range just before halftime. This win marked Argyle's third consecutive league success under manager Tom Cleverley.
But here's where it gets interesting: Wilshere's admiration for Tolaj was evident. He stated, "I think when you play against a nine like Tolaj, he will create moments. And this is the part most people miss: Despite not scoring, Tolaj had a golden opportunity to extend his impressive 15 goals in all competitions tally. Wilshere acknowledged Argyle's strength and Tom Cleverley's commendable work. "Plymouth are a good team and Tom is doing a good job," he commented. "He probably didn't start the way he wanted to but I have heard him speak a lot about how many changes there were to the squad. I think he was trying to find that consistency, and he has got some good players now, and especially a good nine (Tolaj) you can score in any moment."
He further elaborated on Tolaj's impact, saying, "He's definitely the best I have seen at this level so far this season. Tom will obviously want to keep him but I'm sure there will be people looking at him. He's good."
Now, here's a point that might spark some debate: While Wilshere was effusive in his praise for Tolaj, his own Luton Town side struggled to create clear-cut chances in the first half, failing to register a single shot on target. Argyle, on the other hand, had opportunities to put the game beyond doubt by halftime.

Wilshere expressed his team's frustration, stating, "I thought we done enough to get something out of the game, apart from put the ball in the back of the net." "I knew the energy in the stadium, I know it means so much to the people of Plymouth so I knew it was going to be a tough place to come, and we spoke about that." He added, "We just couldn't put the ball in the net."

Wilshere spoke fondly of their connection, "I love Clevs. We played together, we played against each other. I had loads of battles against Tom. Then we step into the coaching world at the same time. We have shared ideas over the years and we stayed in touch... I wish Tom good luck, I'm just devastated he beat us today."
